When I woke up this morning, I had already determined it would be a shitty day. I was supposed to wake up at 6, take my car into Toyota by 7:30 thanks to my tire pressure light coming on (which is WTF-worthy since I just got new tires three months ago), drive 45 minutes to class from 11-12:15, nanny two out-of-control sixth- and seventh-graders from 12:30-6:30, and babysit from 8-12 back home. An exhausting, long day, right?

Okay, yeah, it’s 10:30pm and now I’m feeling it. I almost went back to sleep after my car was finished and skipped class, but I DIDN’T! I went, and not only that, I went 40 minutes early and treated myself to coffee (plus the Panera bagel I ate before I left town.) My professor is really interesting, and he brings up a lot of points that many other Psych professors don’t (like the fact that Psychology is the only science field that needs to hike up their actual scientific research, not just make shit up.) We went through research methods, which generally makes me fall asleep since I don’t know HOW many classes I’ve taken throughout my school career that go over that. He had a bunch of hilarious anecdotes to go along with the lecture, and my eyelids definitely didn’t even come close to shutting.

So I get out of class and am dreading nannying. These girls are a handful, and that would be an understatement. I was their fall semester nanny; I eventually had to actually write out rules, privileges, and consequences for them- they were that out of hand. (At ages ten and eleven!) Then when I left in the spring, they got a different nanny, who apparently didn’t do anything. They’re back to their old ways of being absolutely uncontrollable and ridiculously embarrassing in public, most of the time. Unfortunately, I’m only watching them a total of three weeks this summer, and not consecutively, so it’ll be hard to “retrain” them. ANYWAY- back to today. Blah blah blah, I get to their house and I’m starving, so I run back across the street to Einstein Bros. Pretty much as soon as I walk back in the door, my phone rings, and it’s Emma, whom I’m also supposed to be nannying this week. She needs to go to Target, and luckily for me, Mari and her friend Mia wanted to buy Cheetos… so I drag the two of them, plus Allie, out to pick up Emma. She gets in the car all WTF? cause apparently I forgot to tell her I’m also watching them. We go to Target, don’t get kicked out (success), then go to Panera. Now, these kids are all POLAR OPPOSITES from each other. Like, you could not have four different kids in the same car. And at Panera? They all talked and giggled like they had been friends forever! I had to take Emma home after that to get her to a birthday party, but then I dragged the other three to their little town pool. We hung out there for a good three hours in the beautiful, hot weather; the girls ran into a million friends and left me to my book. YEA!

An hour drive home, and I had enough time to stop by my house and get some food/talk to my mother. She was in a good mood (win), she made me grilled cheese (double win), and I found out both me and baby can stay on her insurance for awhile (triple win.) Ran off to babysit Jack and Charlie after that… which is where I am sitting now, on their couch. Charlie and I played with trains for for-ev-er, he beat me in matching, we made words in the bath, ate Bomb Pops, and shot each other (and his brother) with Nerf guns. I am SO their favorite babysitter.

Isn’t it ironic how your most dreaded day can turn out to be great, even when you’ve barely had any sleep?

I’ve been failing at blogging.

On some level, I have things to write about. Like the 90% I got on my Psychology Statistics exam, the 91% on my Child Development exam, and the 86% on my Musicology exam; I’m super proud of those. This semester is the first where I feel like I actually have a handle on school, and the first I’m not only starting out well, but the first I really enjoy.

Beyond school and nannying though, I don’t have much to say. I’m in the midst of a potential life-changing event, but I can’t give those details yet, as I haven’t told some people who deserve to know before the general public. That’s consuming a good deal of my time- researching, planning, preparing. I’m excited, and the minute I can write about it, I will.

In family news, my dad moved back to Washington DC. He’s doing business out there, business I couldn’t blog about even if I knew what it was, but he comes back here to Kansas on the weekends. That leaves me to help with getting Will to/from school, finding him dinner, etc when my mom is on call. Its gotten to the point where I’m now at home more often than I’m at my apartment.

TK and Len are adjusting to KU quite wonderfully. We all still have other groups of friends, so we aren’t driving each other crazy, being in the same school again. Len and I watch for TK all the time, since she’s hilarious when she huffs and puffs walking up campus, late for class.

Anyway, no promises I’ll be better at blogging, at least for a little while… but at some point, I’ll be back with plenty of news for everyone.

(P.S. I’m deleting my Plurk account, so follow me on Twitter.)

**Update** I wrote this super quick last night, so I’m going into more detail today.

—-

I keep getting reminders that my domain registration for vibrantandzany.com is due to expire here soon.

Obv, I use mochridhe.net now, but VaZ still redirects. Should I reregister, or let it go?

(Actually, I think I answered my own question. On BlueHost, VaZ is the database where all my site files are; MC is just my parked domain. It’ll be easier to just keep VaZ. I think.)

—-

ELIESA AND I HAVE DIGITAL CABLE AND INTERNET! Rejoice with me. We’ve been living here since the beginning of June, and being at the mercy of the clubhouse for their wireless or going all the way home to use my family’s has been such an inconvenience. Time Warner added our apartment complex to their list of places they’re taking over, so we met with one of the salesmen last week and got the ball rolling. They came and installed everything for us, including our wireless access point so I didn’t have to. This shit is costing us $87 a month, but we have to have it. Cable and internet have become almost a necessity for people now, especially students like us since pretty much everything for our classes is online.

—-

I started my new nanny job this week. Basically, every weekday 3-6pm all I do is remind them to do their homework/chores and wash some of the family’s laundry. Their mom adopted them both from Romania when they were babies, which is pretty kickass if you ask me. The girls are totally extroverted and easygoing, so being there doesn’t really seem like a job, it’s just fun and entertaining. Monday I only lost the dog and then the kid once, AND FOUND THEM BOTH, so REALLY, it was quite a successful first day.

—-

I added one more class to my schedule this fall- Precalc. I was thinking about African history (as I said previously), but I just took College Algebra over the summer so math is fresh in my mind. And this is the last math class I will EVER have to take. EVER! I’m doing it online since the class this semester is not only full, but also at a time that conflicts with my schedule.

—-

Beyond all this stuff, nothing remotely new or exciting is happening in my life right now. OH! Except for my roommate, Eliesa, adopting a dog! AND THAT STORY! I FORGOT TO WRITE ABOUT THAT STORY! Something for next time…

I wanted to write a blog post about this new school semester, but my schedule has been all screwy and there wasn’t much to say. I FINALLY got everything set; the problem was, the community college where I took Intro to Psych and College Algebra (among other things… but those are the most important) hadn’t sent my transcript over to KU. I was checking, checking, checking my student account every day and looking at my grades to see if the transfer credit had been posted, and nada. Which basically meant I was SOL when enrolling, because I needed both the Psych and Math credits to enroll in more Psych and Business classes.

That was going on up till this morning. By some pure stroke of genius, I decided to look at my ARTS form, this piece of paper that you can generate online which tells you the various general education requirements you need and how many you have fulfilled. Well, on my ARTS form, my transfer credits are listed!! So I finally FIIIIIINALLY!!!!!! got to finish enrolling this morning.

My complete fall semester 2009:
MWF 9-11:50 up on campus, with a marketing class, Psych stats class, and musicology class
TR 9:30-10:45 at the community college, with child development

(and I believe I’ll take African History or something online to fulfill my Non-Western requirement)

PEOPLE. PEOPLE. PEOPLE. CELEBRATE WITH ME!!!!

I don’t think I’ve ever been this happy over anything school-related. EVER.

The coolest thing I’ve seen in awhile happened Wednesday night. Hillary and I went to my old elementary school super late at night to swing, and our time there just happened to coincide with a meteor shower. Eventually we stopped swinging to actually search for meteors in the sky, and BY GOD THERE WERE LOTS OF THEM.

I used to watch the sky before I finally fell asleep each night. At least once a week I’d see a shooting star, which is totally cool given that people complain all the time about never having seen a shooting star. But this meteor shower? Those meteors left big, long streaks of light after them.

It was tight.

—-

Will officially started high school yesterday. He says it’s just school, lame, sucks, whatever (that scarily sounds like me), but he’s finding the fact that he can leave campus for lunch quite liberating. They only have 25 minutes for lunch, and the only places near the school are fast food, so I’m fully expecting him to gain 24,290 pounds by the end of the year.

Anyway, I’m the one that gets to pick him up after school until my mother hires someone else to, and the two times I’ve gone remind me just how much I loathed seeing that school every day. I can’t believe kids deal with that for three years. Sometimes I wonder what it would’ve been like if I had stayed, and then these haha-yeah-right moments come along where I laugh at myself for even contemplating that possibility. I really am happy with the choice I made.

—-

My two best friends moved into the dorms today, a full two days ahead of the normal incoming freshmen due to rush. I haven’t seen either; I figure they need time to settle and get adjusted. I feel weird that I’m not sharing this time with them, not getting used to freedom and flexibility and living on your own (well, with another person), since I already went through all that.

However, I am ECSTATIC that my (term used loosely) graduating class is finally in college. And I could not be happier that both Len and Erin decided on KU, even if it will take some adjusting to have all three of us together permanently again.

My stress level is THROUGH THE ROOF.

A month ago, I disappeared from the real world and laid on my couch for four straight days. I turned off all technology (minus the TV) and got up only when I had to pee. At that time, everything had snowballed; school was getting crazy, vacation plans were crazy, my family was in Germany, my friends were pissing me off, my guys were confusing, and I stupidly offered to help out the most horrible human being on the face of the planet and got screwed over in the process. Needless to say, I totally fell apart.

Now, summer classes end in sixteen days. I have two ten-minute persuasive speeches to write, a speech final, and two major math exams left. My bank account is emptying scarily fast, mostly thanks to the speeding ticket I got yesterday, the parking ticket I got while I was in Maine (yeah, clearly I suck at driving), rent/utility bills, gas, and paying for skating.

This is supposed to be SUMMER, aka THE FUN TIME OF THE YEAR. And I’m currently existing solely off of coffee and a great big bottle of Advil.

MAKE IT STOPPPPPP!!!!!!!!

To enroll in each coming semester at KU, you are required to meet with your advisor. I do believe this is because of the vast amount of students who are too dumb to figure out their degree requirements on their own; granted, it is slightly confusing, but if you really care, you can figure it out. I know, ’cause I have.

Anyway, KU opens enrollment by class (i.e. senior, then junior, etc) and then by last name. By the time you’re allowed to enroll online, you probably should have your advising appointment completed so you can enroll immediately and get the classes you want.

In a stroke of pure genius (note the sarcasm), I figured I could just put off my advising appointment for Fall 2009 enrollment till the summer when my life has settled down significantly. After meeting with my advisor, I’d just enroll then. Well, I get this email Friday (FRIDAY!!!!!!) informing me that undergraduate enrollment for the fall would be closed off Sunday (TODAY) and not open again until August. After all the incoming freshmen have their orientations and enroll. AFTER ALL THE CLASSES ARE FULL.

So, I frantically call the advising center on Friday, asking to make an appointment TODAY so that I could enroll before fall enrollment closed for the summer. The guy WHO I HATE on the other end told me that well, he couldn’t make me an appointment for today, but how about Monday? “Ummm… enrollment closes Sunday.” “I know, but you need an appointment.” “I KNOW. That’s why I want one TODAY, so I can enroll BEFORE August.” “Well, the earliest I have is Monday. Then you can enroll in August.”

Ohhhh someone should give me a medal for not screaming. I’m pretty sure they did that on purpose… that if they really wanted to, they could squeeze me in for the FIFTEEN MINUTE appointment. I figure, though, it really isn’t his fault, it’s mine for being SUCH A DUMBASS and procrastinating.

I only need three classes at KU in the fall, as I’m taking the other two at JCCC close to my apartment. Fingers crossed that I’ll get okay ones that work with my schedule.

DON’T BE STUPID LIKE ME! MAKE YOUR APPOINTMENTS NOW!!!
